Did you know that from 1659 to 1681, celebrating Christmas in Massachusetts was illegal? This was due to a Puritan law called “Penalty for Keeping Christmas”. This came from the Puritan belief that the “Christmas festivals as were superstitiously kept in other countries” were a “great dishonor of God and offence of others.” If found celebrating, there would be a fee of 5 shillings ($65 today). Over time, these principles shifted. By the 19th century, Christmas had morphed into the holiday we know today, with familial celebrations in the home. This new tradition brought with it gift-giving. The first American advertisement for Christmas gifts was placed by a Salem, Massachusetts, bookshop in 1806 (pictured above). This trend grew over time and by the mid 19th century newspapers included curated lists of the best books of the season as gift guides for shoppers. Today, books continue to see a large influx in sales around the winter holiday season, with almost 1 in every 4 books being sold in November and December globally. #HolidayShopping # FridayFact #ABM #Bookbinding #bookselling #19thC #Christmas #Xmas #Listical ... Field trips enhance traditional learning with social-emotional education, hands-on activities, and real-life contextual applications. ABM field trips include a guided tour where students learn about industrial history followed by a workshop where students bind their own book under the guidance of an instructor. Students take ownership of their own learning and it fosters a personal connection with design. The number of students served on ABM field trips increased 100% from 2024 to 2025.
