Zhen Xian Bao, or Chinese Thread Books was invented as a way to store embroidery materials such as thread and needles. Commonly used by rural communities their decoration and style varied by region. Zhen Xian Bao is constructed only using origami, with each box tucked into the larger section below and held together without adhesive. Traditional books can contain up to 30 pockets with every layer larger than the one above. Many of these books are lost to time due to their fragile nature and utilitarian use. #chinesenewyear #zhenxianbao #threadbooks #bookbinding #oragami #abm ... See MoreSee Less

Have you seen the books of #openset2025 yet and wondered what the bundle at the spine attaching the signatures is? Meet our friend the meeting guard! This binding element dates back more than 160 years having been used in photo albums, records, manuscripts, and more. It is used to make the binding of a book more accessible in its useability. The meeting guard is sewn around the signature and then flipped to be inverse, allowing more space for the text to be separated from the spine. There are variations on this method but all can be useful for tight, thick, or stiff bindings bringing another level of flexibility. #FridayFact #meetingguard #openset #finebindings #bookbinding #abm ...
