The Indian Primer 1669 is an “Early American” book believed to have been bound by the Wampanoag people in what is now Massachusetts. The text, which was printed on the first printing press in the US features the Wampanoag alphabet, The Lord's Prayer, the Catechism, and an index of the Old and New Testaments. It was intended to force conversion to Christianity on the Wampanoag people. This unusually small book measures only 2.4x3” and is made with American Beech wood scale boards. The binding itself stabs through the pages and is sewn with leather thongs. The cover is white leather with adornments, It is not typical of schoolbooks which would have had less costly material, indicating Indigenous craftsmanship. The white leather is believed to be brain-tanned buckskin, rather than dry heat-treated. This is a typical tanning method found across various Indigenous nations across the east coast.
