The American Bookbinders Museum

The American Bookbinders Museum explores and celebrates the craft, culture, and tools of bookbinding.

Chicago Screws were invented in the 19th century by the Chicago Screw Company. A small screw in fastener, it is know by many names: Chicago Fastener, Chicago Bols, Sex Bolt, Screw Post, Binding Post, and Tee Nuts Whatever you call it, ithas made its mark on bookbinding history and is commonly found in legal bindings and albums. They are inserted by punching holes in the covers and interior pages, the screw top is then inserted over the post and sealed by twisting the screw top onto the post. The functionality of this binding is similar to that of a Japanese stab in that the covers either need to be soft or articulated to view the interior pages. Join the American Bookbinders Museum on July 12th from 12:00-3:00 pm and create your own photo album utilizing the Chicago screw. This workshop is only $45 and comes with all the tools and materials you will need to walk away with a beautiful album of your own creation. #bookbinding #chicago #screwpostbinding #Workshop #sf #books ... This image is taken from Oxford, St. John MS 17, a 12th century manuscript compiling various texts, maps, and diagrams for creating calendars and timekeeping. Covering astronomy, history, mathematics, geography, and more, it captures the intellectual history of Anglo-Saxon England. The foundation of timekeeping was astronomy, tracking solar and lunar months based on the movements of the sun and moon. This image is an example of a sundial, showing the location of sunrise and sunset at the equinoxes and solstices. The outermost bow running from the bottom left to the bottom right shows the path of the sun on the summer solstice. The central bow, arcing from left to right, shows the path of the sun on the equinoxes. The innermost bow, not shown, would join the two innermost yellow roundels that mark sunrise and sunset on the winter solstice. #FridayFact #bookbinding #Solstice #Manuscript #ABM #Bookbindersmuseum Source: digital.library.mcgill.ca/ms-17/folio.php?p=35v (also source of the image).
