Pasteboard, or manuscript waste board, is a type of composite board first in use around 500 CE. It was convenient and cheap compared to other boards at the time, pasteboard would later be replaced with the sturdier book board we use today. Its relatively inexpensive nature made it popular in Early America, which had limited resources. It is created by mixing book trimmings with paste and letting it harden.
