The American Bookbinders Museum

The American Bookbinders Museum explores and celebrates the craft, culture, and tools of bookbinding.

“Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.” - Cesar Chavez, 1984Today, we honor Cesar Chavez, a civil rights activist and visionary leader who dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of workers. Chavez founded the first successful farm workers union in American history, fighting for better wages, working conditions, and dignity for farm workers. His legacy continues to inspire generations to advocate for social justice. In 2021, two books about Cesar Chavez - Harvesting Hope by Kathleen Krull and Who Was Cesar Chavez? by Dana Meachen Rau - were unfortunately banned in Pennsylvania's Central York School District, according to PEN America's Index of School Book Bans. If you want to learn more about the harms of banned books please join us for the unveiling of a new art installation The Banned Books Jail here at the American Bookbinders Museum.
