Ever wonder what materials are used to make the book you are reading? It may be more complex than you realize. Historically they were made from organic materials like paper, wood, and leather, but now there is a myriad of interesting synthetics.

Come see our latest exhibit and explore the different categories of materials and their various uses before it closes THIS SATURDAY.

💜💛💜💛Happy Women's Equality Day! 💜💛💜💛

In the 17th and 18th centuries women entering the workforce were being underpaid compared to their male counterparts, because of this the Californian women's unions were formed. One of these unions is the Bindery Women's Union which was formed in 1902. As a member of this union, you worked an 8 ½ hour work day with a minimum starting wage of $7 per week that would increase (based upon your skill level) to $10. In addition to these benefits, women were able to work in areas of bookbinding that were traditionally the jobs of men, such as finishing.

“The Magic of Marbling: Unique by Design” features the history and craftsmanship involved in the art of marbling. Come and see decorative endpapers, boxes, scarves and more while exploring some of the many patterns that are seen in this artform. This exhibit is free to the public and will be open September 21- December 28, 2024.

Historically, bookbinders have faced financial dif

Historically, bookbinders have faced financial difficulties despite working 13 hour days in their specialized craft. This, partnered with the unease of the working class in the 18th century, caused the bookbinders of London to strike in 1786. Five journeyman bookbinders formed a bookbinders union (also known as a combination at the time) and were imprisoned for doing so. During their sentence one bookbinder, William Wood, died while in prison. However, the impact made by these bookbinders and other revolutionaries led to the eventual legalization of English trade unions in 1824.

Happy National Paperback Day! The paperback book is a mass-market product whose popularity flourished in the 1930s. While these books were originally reprints from hard-cover books, they quickly became known for original works published in popular genres like science fiction, horror, and mysteries.

One of their many advantages was their low cost to the consumer. While this promoted literacy, the materials used for paperbacks with their “perfect bindings” (adhesive bindings), were not intended to stand up to time.

Join the American Bookbinders Museum in re-binding your favorite paperback—if you don’t have a special paperback the museum will provide one. Your paperback should have its spine still intact. The glued spine will not be changed, it will be reinforced. Join this rebinding workshop and give new life to that special book.

Watch “The Story of the Book”, learn about “Papyrus, Parchment and Paper”, “Guilds” and how “Printing” impacted bookbinders. The four short videos bring the history of the book to life. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Happy Cuban Independence Day!

In the 1960s, Cuba experienced political and social upheaval, which spurred a unique form of artistic expression through art books. These books had a distinct vibrant street-life style, were sewn by hand, and used common materials at hand like butcher paper. They did not achieve significant recognition in the art world until the 1990s when emerging book artists like Ronaldo Estevez were recognized.
