On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize Native practices that have shaped bookbinding history. For centuries, Indigenous communities in North America have used a process called brain tanning to preserve animal skins, typically deer, using the animals’ brain. While most pre-1900 European bindings used vegetable-tanned leather and other processes to preserve skins, records of trade between Indigenous groups and Europeans suggest that brain-tanned leather was also used in bookbinding, though often misidentified. Recent research has brought to light the possibility that brain-tanned skins were used in book production, highlighting the connections between Indigenous knowledge and the history of the book. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #BookBinding Source: Brain-Tanned Leather for Bookbinding: History, Use, and Identification Author: Katherine S.
