The labor of women in bookbinding was long overlooked. One organization that moved women forward in the craft was the British Guild of Women Binders, which opened in 1897. This “guild” operated as a business collective formed in the arts and crafts movement and included members such as Florence Paget, Florence de Rheims, and Eleanor Joachim, among many others. The guild sold books bound by the women who joined and taught classes so more women could enter the field. Fellow binders and collectors of the time questioned the quality of work from The Guild of Women Binders, believing that women could not have made books of their caliber. Instead, they believed the books were made at Hampstead Bindery, an all-male bindery with the same owner as The Guild of Women Binders, and then resold. The guild's exclusivity and high prices partnered with these sentiments and ultimately caused the organization to close in 1904, leaving a legacy of fine craftsmanship. #laborday #bookbinding #bookgirlie #womenbinders #guild #ABM #bookbindersmusuem Photograph by Edward Nudelman of More English Fairy Tales by London: G. According to marbling lore the Spanish Moire, also known as the Spanish Wave technique was invented by accident. This was because of an intoxicated journeyman in the craft whose shaking hands caused the paper to rock, making the ripples this style is known for.
