Combat Paper is an organization that transforms military uniforms into handmade paper. It believes that the fibers of uniforms hold stories and experiences that can be transformed alongside the material itself. Individuals join Combat Paper workshops to turn their own uniforms into paper. Then the pages can be printed on, folded, bound, or even sculpted. ![]()
“We have found that all of us are connected to the military. When these connections are discovered and shared, it can open a deeper understanding between people and expand our collective beliefs about military service and war.” – Combat Paper![]()

Gilbert Baker invented the Pride Flag in San Francisco's Castro district in 1978. The flag is a symbol of unity and power for the LGBT+ community. The flag has changed with time along side the queer community. Today the flag continues to fly proudly in the Castro.
This past year, the Handbookbinders of California, a membership of like-minded bookbinders, were gifted a retired flag from the Castro to incorporate into handbound books. The flag was divided, giving each binder who requested to partake in the project a segment of each color of the flag. Binders created unique editions exploring the history and significance of the Pride flag. ![]()
Join some a panel of binders to learn about the challenges they faced handling this material, the flag’s symbolism in each piece, and the unique binding approaches of each artist. ![]()
