The American Bookbinders Museum explores and celebrates the craft, culture, and tools of bookbinding.

November is Native American Heritage Month. During this month, we look at Indigenous history and reflect on their achievements and culture. In this spirit, we are highlighting the Native use of birch bark in pre-colonial bookbinding. Used by a multitude of Indigenous nations, birch bark is a flexible, thin material that is easily removed from the tree. It was also used in many other forms, such as baskets or in crafting canoes. The Anishinaabe used the bark for etching pictograms (Wiigwaasabak) and making ceremonial scrolls long before European colonization. Other nations used birch bark in similar ways. ...
