1916 View of the DC Cook Installation in Elgin Ill
Photograph
This is another view of the DC Cook Installation as explained in 2025.4.10 and 2025.4.11. This is from the American Assembling Brochure you will find in 2025.4.5.
We know from the trial transcripts that the first covering machine (serial Number 1) was installed at DC cook in 1909. It is also known that the first machine is the one found in the photograph in 2025.4.10 from Charles Juengst’s own testimony. We know that serial number 1 was returned to the Croton Falls Factory and was replaced with serial number 11 in 1912. This photo is obviously of the later design of serial number 11.
The most notable feature is the cover feeder area visible in the foreground. The design has changed significantly from the design visible in 2025.4.10. This new design can now accept a, much larger pile of covers, meaning a person is no longer required to be stationed here to keep the supply of covers fed, freeing up resources.
The adjustments have been linked as visible by the crank handle and chain adjustment design that allows both guide rails for the cover feeder to be adjusted in parallel from one position simplifying the time it takes to make adjustments for different sizes of covers, which we often refer to as makeready time.
The Covering machine clamp design is different with more spring added to a 3 spring design from a 2 spring design adding more uniform motion of the clamp closing and less likelyhood of cocking the clamp aiding in keeping the book registered,
