A 21st-century Fine Press

The fine press tradition is characterized by letterpress printing with special care and attention to typography, original artwork and hand bindings using the finest papers and materials. It’s revival in the late 19th-century by William Morris countered the industrialization of book production with finely crafted limited edition volumes, elevating the book to an art form. Suntup Editions is an exemplar of all that Morris championed with a 21st-century twist.

This exhibit offers an in-depth look at the process of this innovative publisher—a 21st-century fine press. It includes all you expect from a traditional fine press: original samples of page designs, typography and original illustrations. Additionally you will see what differentiates Suntup Editions: multi-state editions, a broader offering of literary genres, and limited edition leather bindings.

On display is a curated selection of multi-state editions. See the design progression of the more widely available Artist edition to the very limited Roman edition. Artist and Classic editions limited to 500-1000 copies are no less carefully designed than the more limited Roman edition numbering 5-10. A side-by-side comparison illustrates the design choices utilized in the production of a multi-state edition.

Offering a broad selection of literary genres, Suntup publishes classic to contemporary literature. Included in its catalog are science fiction, fantasy, horror, and children’s literature with titles as varied as The Handmaid’s Tale, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, and The Divine Comedy. Its in-house bindery produces a variety of bindings from the classic cloth-bound case binding to fine leather design bindings.

Suntup Editions has put its own stamp on the fine press tradition. See a curated selection of publications from a unique 21st-century fine press; a must see exhibit for anyone interested in book design, publishing or beautiful books. Many of the volumes on display can only be found in private collections. See exquisite bindings, original artwork and finely crafted letterpress printing in this in-depth look at the state of the fine press today.
