Can’t make it to a docent-led tour? Or just prefer to do your own thing? We know that guided tours are not for everyone. For those that choose to go it alone we offer the ABM Signature Tour, available Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm. It takes about 30 minutes, so plan your start by 3:30pm. The Self-guided tour lets you browse at your own pace and linger over the exhibits that strike your fancy.
Our Signature Tour reverse-engineers the first step of bookbinding. As you unfold the signature, you walk through the steps of hand bookbinding used for centuries and still used today. As you walk the floor you will travel through time, from 100 CE to the early 20th century. See the momentous inventions of the industrial revolution that changed bookbinding forever by transforming it from single volume production to mass production; this era of rapid invention made books affordable and available to all.
This is just the beginning, we plan to develop audio and video clips to supplement the Signature Tour. We need your help to raise the funds needed to bring the text to life. Join us in telling the story of the book, donate today and move the American Bookbinders Signature Tour into the digital age.
