Looking for an engaging way to interest your class in an overlooked but important part of history?. With the option of visiting the museum or having our instructor visit your classroom, American Bookbinders Museum offers an array of customizable tours and activities to best meet your students needs.

Visits to the American Bookbinders Museum include a 45-minute docent-guided tour of the museum covering the history of bookbinding from hand binding through industrialization. Complete your visit with a 45-minute bookbinding workshop where students create a book of their own. The ABM can accommodate up to 30 students in a group. Options for the workshop include:

  • Tiny Craft book (recommended grades 1-4)

  • Exposed Spine Hardcover Journal (recommended grades 5-8)

  • Japanese Stab (recommended grades 9-12)

For schools in San Francisco, the ABM also offers an in-class program. An instructor will visit your classroom to teach a bookbinding workshop from the options listed above. On-site visits do not include the historical lessons—a great option for financially constrained classrooms.

Please fill out the form below to let us know what group experience best meets your needs, or call the museum at 415-824-9754. A staff member will be in touch shortly to discuss next steps and/or customization for your classroom experience.
