Design for a Modern Century

A Centenary Celebration of the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationales des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes and its Legacy.

Art Deco has influenced design over the past 100 years. Using Book Arts as our canvas, we present a timeline of Art Deco inspired design from 1925 to 2025.

Art Deco minimalism of the 1920’s and 30’s utilized clean simple shapes with geometric and/or stylized natural forms, a contrast to, and some may say an antidote to, the grand excess of Victorian design.

Streamline Moderne of the 1930’s and 40’s emphasizes sleek aerodynamic curves and long horizontal lines with an
industrial sensibility heightening utility
and function.

Mid-century Modern of the 1940’s to 1970’s continued to embrace minimalist design stylistically using simple lines without decorative embellishments.

Contemporary Art from the 1970’s to present, draws upon the design legacy of the past.

From French Arts Décoratifs, to contemporary designs of today, Art Deco is an enduring influence.

Visit us to see this panorama of Art Deco inspired design. The exhibit opens September 13th, and closes December 27th. Access to the exhibit is free.

Join us for the opening reception on Saturday September 20.
