Webinar: Wire Edge Binding

Wire Edge bindings are a unique form of binding that transforms a book into a moving sculpture. Panels are hinged using metal wire or thread, giving books a new range of motion. Our speaker, Daniel Kelm, who invented the Wire Edge binding in the mid 1980s, will discuss this binding style and its unique characteristics.

Wire Edge Binding (WEB) is what evolved when I decided to challenge the traditional form of the codex in 1984. My goal was to figure out how to use a binding structure to support the narrative of the book, not merely contain it. As I’ve maintained for years, I think a book is most successful at telling a story when all of the components work together toward a single effect. The deep, expressive qualities of a binding are to be found not just on the surface, but in its form, material, and movement.

This webinar is an introduction to Wire Edge Binding, and the work that led to it, with a slide show of bindings to illustrate the concepts discussed. I look forward to a conversation concerning the potential of the structure, and to give a glimpse of what is possible with Wire Edge Binding.

About: Daniel E. Kelm was awarded the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Guild of Book Workers. Kelm is a book artist who enjoys expanding the concept of the book. He is known for his innovative structures as well as his traditional work. His expression as an artist emerges from the integration of work in science and the arts. Alchemy is a common theme in his bookwork. Before Daniel began his career in the book arts, he taught chemistry at the University of Minnesota. He is known for his extensive knowledge of materials.

Kelm’s experience with bookbinding began in 1978 with employment in the first of several production studios where he learned progressively more specialized traditional techniques. In 1983 he opened his studio in Easthampton, MA, U.S.A., called The Wide Awake Garage, where he designs and produces artist’s books, interpretive fine bindings, and book sculptures.
