Webinar: Simply Beautiful: The Long Stitch Binding

The long stitch is a foundational technique in contemporary bookbinding. The technique appeared in the 11th century and continues to be used by binders, artists, and conservators today. This webinar provides an overview of the long stitch binding’s history and an analysis of its distinctive features. Presenter Suzanne Glémot will discuss her own use of the long stitch in her bindings and artist’s book work, including pointers on materials and tools she’s found especially useful over the years.

About: Suzanne Glémot is an artist and bookbinder living in Iowa City, Iowa. Originally from France, she moved from Mississippi to the Midwest in the mid-2010s to study bookbinding and letterpress printing at the University of Iowa Center for the Book (UICB). After several years of teaching bookbinding workshops, and working in the field of book and library preservation, Suzanne joined the faculty at the UICB as an instructor of bookbinding in the fall of 2025.
