Monthly Bookbinding Workshop: Spinning Accordion
Present your loved one with a homemade gift this Valentine’s Day. Create a spinning accordion book customized with your own ephemera. This variation of the accordion binding is a great introduction to bookbinding for those just starting out.
Originally called orihon in Japanese, from the root words ori (fold) and hon (book), the accordion-style binding has been in circulation since the Heian period (794–1185 CE). It is created by folding long sheets of paper back-and-forth. According to one legend, it was discover when a Buddhist monk squashed his sutra scroll, effectively folding it up for convenience.
