Binder Richard Tarlov will explore a variety of metals he has used and how he has combined them with other materials.  He will share his process for shaping and marking metal, ultimately transforming it, and also demonstrate binding techniques using metal piano hinges and rivets. Tarlov will offer his insights into the inspiration behind creating books that challenge conventional notions of what a book is.

Our Speaker: Richard Tarlov has been creating books for fifty years, but only in the past 20 has metal become his focus.His creative pursuits run alongside his work in the natural food industry where he’s been most recently the owner of Canyon Market in Glen Park, San Francisco. An inveterate collector of materials, ephemera, memorabilia and hardware, Richard tries to incorporate all of these in his art books. Richard grew up in South Side Chicago and has a BA and MA from Middlebury College.
