Composing Stick
Object/Artifact
A small composing stick, used to arrange type, prior to place the individual lines into a forme and lock it up for printing. The screw head on the proper left side is used to adjust the size of the gap for type, ensuring that each line of type is the same width. Lines of text were justified in printing, just as manuscripts were (to the best of the ability of the scribe).
