Brenda Gallagher The Helen Fragments

Artist Statement:
BRENDA GALLAGHER (USA)
The story of the Iliad to me is simply a story of dudes fighting over a woman. My design focuses on the prize which provoked the war: a lovely woman. The warriors are represented by the incisions which echo the stance of the figures in McNiell’s drawing of the standoff between the warring forces, with spears represented in tooling. The spine is decorated with the icon of the spear, a symbol of the weapons of war. The colors of the goatskin were chosen as a nod to ancient Greek pottery, always in black and russet.
