Artist Statement:
VANESSA HARDY (USA)
Little is known of Helen, but she tells the story of the Trojan War in her weaving. This became an important design element. The “woven” alphabetic onlays play against the plain leather, expressing the paradox of this unknown but all seeing woman. Extensive use of negative space echoes that within the text. The lettering was inspired by the work of indigenous American artist Jeffrey Gibson. The letters are barely decipherable, like Helen herself.
