Open Tues-Sat 10am-4pm: Walk-ins Welcome

September 14 – November 30, 2019
10am – 4pm

Studying binding structures is a starting point for book arts students, not the endgame. The binding is the framework in which five key elements of an artist book—structure, narrative, sequence, flow, and production—are combined. Book artists learn a wide variety of binding structures, providing a basis for infinite interpretation and invention. Instructors use models to ground students in the fundamental construction of books, while encouraging them to experiment and invent.

This exhibit draws from three Book Arts programs to illustrate the intersection of instructors’ models and the creations of their students. The variety of students’ works exemplify how contemporary artists are pushing the boundaries of traditional binding structures. Embracing creativity and experimentation, students discover new forms in a traditional medium.
