Publisher's Binding- Art Nouveau

Sarah Wyman Whitman

Bound in cream vellum-like cloth with Wyman's unique typography to central title enclosed within a gilt ruled border. Design is notable for the floral design within the first word of the title whose stem extends through subsequent two words of the title. Four floral corner designs complete the design which is blind stamped to the rear. Highly significant are the gilt patterned art nouveau endpapers designed by Whitman, which are exceedingly scarce. Black and white illustrations. Top edge gilt. Cloth binding has darkened and stained - a common problem with this choice of polished vellum-like cloth, a favorite of Whitman's, which, when pristine, is stunning, but rarely found in this condition.

Gift inscription to front dated 1893.
