Publisher's Binding- Art Nouveau

Sarah Wyman Whitman

Bound in a three-piece binding of a wide smooth grain deep olive/brown cloth to the spine, which extends into a third of the cover space, where is it joined by a lighter olive colored cloth. A dark green vertical long-stemmed art nouveau flower (a poppy?) is stamped next to the cloth join, from the bottom, where the stem bisects the author's name, to the top where it just intersects with the third word of the title. Spine title and author stamped in gilt. Top edge gilt. Lettering in Whitman's signature typography. The effect is one of elegant monochrome simplicity. This is a uniform Whitman binding for a series of Burroughs titles issued by HM in the late 1890s, with the only variation being the blossom design.

Natural history--Outdoor books.
