Handwritten on flyleaf: "Pearl Judd Bentley -- 77 Rotch Street -- New Bedford -- Mass. -- Sept. 8, 1933 -- While Miss Alcott was in Rome in 1871, news of the death of her brother-in-law, John B. Pratt, reached her: 'Began to write a new book, "Little Men," that John's death may not leave Anna and the dear little boys in want.'"
